Carbon Offset - What is it?

I'm not a scientist or an environmental expert, and I don't have a degree in this field. What I do have is a passion for reducing waste and helping the environment. So I'd like to explain why carbon offsetting matters to us—in my own words, without the technical jargon.

Most of us know that carbon dioxide (CO₂) is one of the major contributors to climate change. Every day, carbon emissions are created through activities such as heating our homes, driving our cars, flying, and many industrial processes. These emissions build up in the atmosphere, trapping heat and contributing to global warming.

Why our trees matter

Trees play an important part in helping to reduce this. They absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis, storing carbon in their wood, roots and the surrounding soil. Quite simply, the more trees we plant and protect, the more carbon can be removed from the atmosphere.

Make It Wild

After a great deal of research and many conversations, we chose to work with Make it Wild. We visited one of their forest's to learn more about what they do and met Christopher, one of the co-founders, along with John, their Partnership Manager.

They immediately understood what we were trying to achieve: reducing the number of living Christmas trees going to landfill, creating woodland for wildlife, and making a positive contribution through carbon offsetting. After that first meeting, I actually cried. It meant so much to find people who truly understood our vision and wanted to help us make it happen.

How we offset our Carbon

Following our Christmas deliveries last year, I sent John, from Make It Wild, the total number of miles we had travelled. He calculated the amount of carbon we needed to offset the emissions from those journeys, and we purchased the appropriate carbon offset. We're proud to have received a certificate confirming our contribution.

As a result, we'll be helping to create a woodland that can be enjoyed for generations to come. Our dream is to see it flourish into a thriving habitat, filled with an abundance of wildlife.

Would you like to offset your carbon?

If you'd like to offset some of your own carbon footprint—whether that's from travelling, heating your home, or everyday life—you can find out more using the link.

Are you a business or know of a business who would plant trees

If you own a business, or know a business that may be interested in planting trees in Scotland to help offset its carbon footprint, I'd encourage you to get in touch with Make it Wild. They are the experts, and they've been incredibly supportive, not only of our business but of me personally as I've learned more about this journey.

THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ OUR STORY.

Due to ill health, I'm no longer able to continue in my previous career, but this little business brings me so much joy.

Seeing it grow, knowing we're making a difference, and receiving such wonderful support from our customers means the world to me.
